Rocky Shore Trip – Year 12 Biology
On the 7th of March all of the Year 12 Biology students went on a trip to Goat Island Marine Reserve for an internal assessment. Even though it was a one and a half hour bus trip and the weather was overcast we all still had a great day. There were a large variety of organisms there to observe and study. It was really informative to see all the species in their natural environment and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Rebecca Tuckey (12HDU)

Muriwai Fieldtrip – 11 Geography
On the 6th of March 85 intrepid Year 11 Geographers headed off to Muriwai to investigate how the different groups that use the beach can be in conflict. It was a cloudy and rainy start but eventually the sun broke through and the West Coast lived up to its wonderful reputation.
Despite being a Tuesday there were an impressive mix of groups to compare and observe, from dog walkers and tourists to Intermediate students on a school camp and of course the fishermen on the rocks and a huge mob of surfers enjoying the waves.
The students were really well behaved, and they were an interested and attentive audience for the Park Rangers and they were very tolerant of the fact that they could not join in the fun with the students learning surf safety and the surfers, despite the massive temptation.
This first-hand experience will definitely help the students with their up-coming internal assessment as they can now describe and relate to how busy and beautiful the black sand beaches of the West Coast can be and why different groups are so passionate about retaining their rights and access to this very special environment.

Summerfest
The Arts are alive and well and were out on display during February’s Summerfest week. At lunchtimes the school grounds bounced into life with a variety of arts related events and activities. Music groups, including the concert band, various rock bands and the occasional solo performance created a concert-like atmosphere and drew crowds of listeners. In the quad, pens and papers were set out so students could participate in a giant drawathon. The images will be combined to form an installation of student art. The year 13 photography class set up a photo booth and invited everyone to be photographed and the photos will be combined to create a three dimensional display. Small groups of drama students in costume, wandered throughout the crowds and the theatresports group encouraged mass participation in their humorous skits. It was a great week in spite of the occasional dampening effect of rainfall!

Welcome to New Year 9 Students
Wednesday, 1 February was a very special day for around 200 new Year 9 students. It was their first day at College and following a traditional Maori Powhiri (Welcome Ceremony) performed by our Kapa Haka group, the new students met their Form Teachers and were shown around the College by their Year 13 Peer Support Leaders.
